efpt nescafé planet freestyle jam
16|06|2006      final report

Nescafé Planet Mykonos Freestyle Jam 16.- 18. 6. 2006 sponsored by Contiki Resorts

That’s why we love to come to Greece/Mykonos - you always get results!

Although the first days where kinda depressing to everyone, we finished a single and even almost a double elimination. The Greek gods of wind had mercy on the reserve day.

After 3 days that had good forecasts, nothing happened, the waiting and hoping where annoying and because this would have been the 3rd event in a row, the mood in the whole EFPT family was going slowly down. The plan, as announced on the first skippers meeting, was to keep Sunday (reserve day) for a super session, which the greek television really wanted to happen. As there was no single finished till Sunday the organizers and officials decided to change the plan, concerning to the wishes of many riders.

Remko de Weerd
Sunday morning the wind kicked in and the games on the water began at 10:00 a.m.
28 Riders from nine different nations couldn’t wait to get on the water, most of them well known in the Windsurfing world but also some new faces entered the competition. After a long break, caused by an injury Normen Günzlein also showed up again, and as we know now it was the right decision for him.

The conditions where pretty good although in the beginning it was awfully gusty so that the riders had a lot to handle, but when the first heat started everyone seemed to be a little relieved. The "wind victim", in form of an awesome party the night before, had paid of.

Normen Günzlein
The competition began like almost a final, meanwhile the level on a 10 000,-€ event is that high you couldn’t tell if it´s one of the first or the last heats. Bobs, Funnells, switch Chachoos, Shakas and even Ponches in the first rounds. The boys where hungry for victory and couldn’t wait their heats, some where at the water all the time just waiting for their heat and throwing moves like the whole thing would be one big jam session.

In the end of the Single we had 4 names left: Andreas Olanderson (JP/NP), Remko de Weerd (Fanatic/Gaastra), Andre Paskowski (F2/North Sails) and Normen Günzlein JP/NP). Remko (Fanatic/North Sails) kicked Andre (F2/North Sails) into the losers final in a super close Heat but doing most of the moves on both sides, even high technical stuff he managed to keep the German behind him. It also wasn´t Andre’s strongest heat on this day, he sort of missed or forgot his safest moves in this heat and had a move twice which cost him the advance. Andi (JP/NP) was the other unlucky in these semis, Normen (JP/NP) gave him almost no chance to pass and so the Final of the Single was a battle between Remko (Fanatic/Gaastra) and Normen (JP/NP). He came to Mykonos to make a small comeback on the tour after a 3 events break, and he did it with a lot of Style. As if he had never left the water, he managed to bring the best moves in a clean and magnificent heat. So the last box of the single elimination ladder showed the name and Sail number of Normen Günzlein (JP/NP).

Andre Paskowski
As the wind not only was good but actually getting better the jury and Organizers decided to go for the double elimination! The planed super session was not so important as to have a good result, the sponsors where glad to have the best European freestylers on their beach and didn’t want to interrupt. The greek television got amazing shots anyway, that’s for certain. In the break between single and double the ladder was prepared and after an hour we could continue to rock. The wind was getting stronger and a lot of guys had to change their sails to smaller sizes, but it didn’t stay that way. Unfortunately the wind began to drop only 4 heats before the end. Antxon Oteagui (JP/NP) and Andi Olanderson JP/NP) did the whole 5 minutes of the last heat but the jury decided not count that one because of the bad wind conditions. So in the end the first 4 places stayed as in the single.

Prize giving
A nice Victory for Normen Günzlein and one he surely did not expect. The organizers around Pezi Huber from Planet Windsurfing ( www.planetwindsurfing.com ) Mykonos did an amazing job, just as last year. The great organized event was again a highlight on this tour, everyone is already talking about the next year!

Greece showed us one more time that its always there for us if we need a result and we can just say "efcharisto" (thanks) to the sponsors, organizers and friends who made this event happen and left so many faces smiling.
