| Summary Day 5: Costa Brava winds too light for an official result at the second Super X event of the 2005 PWA season.
Winds at the 2005 Catalunya Costa Brava PWA Super X World Cup kept up the suspense right until the end, as in the closing hours of the final day they appeared to deliver what everyone had been waiting for all week. The wind picked up quickly in the afternoon, reaching suitable strength for racing at around 16:00. Finally, the long wait was over as the riders for the first and second heat set out to sea, heading upwind for the starting line in 15-20 knots of side onshore winds. As crowds of spectators gathered on the beach to see the world’s finest Super X racers in action, heat number one got underway with UK’s Robby Swift (K-89, JP/ Neil Pryde) taking the lead.

| Unfortunately for Swift however, the winds dropped below the minimum required in mid-heat, forcing the race director to cancel the heat. Next up was heat number two, as soon as the wind would return. For over half an hour the sailors circled the starting buoy, waiting for green light. But as the wind just kept on dropping further, the race was finally called off, eliminating any chance for an official result for the 2005 PWA Super X ranking.
The event was characterized by variable wind conditions. On three competition days the wind was strong enough for sailing for some time, having the fleet out trying the bay’s conditions on for size. But on all three days, the wind back off again before a round of Super X could be completed.
Despite this week’s changeable conditions, both the riders and PWA crew were unanimously enthusiastic about this and previous Costa Brava events, some even comparing it to a week of vacation. As the bay of Roses has delivered excellent conditions in the past, there is no doubt the PWA will return to Catalunya for more events in years to come.

Next up on the PWA calendar is the second wave event of the year, taking place on the notoriously windy beach of Guincho, Portugal. For the first time since 1996, the men’s elite wavesailors will charge the Portuguese Atlantic swell to battle it out for the prestigious 2005 wave crown. Winner of the Hawaii Pro Josh Angulo (US-11) will be defending his position at the top, while the world’s best waveriders will pull out all the stops to steal his crown. The PWA circus touches down in Portugal on the 15th of June for five days of hardcore wavesailing competition.
