Costa Brava Super X
01|06|2005      jun 1st - [day01]

The 2005 Catalunya Costa Brava PWA Super X World Cup
Summary Day 1: Wind plays tricks on PWA riders in the bay of Roses, Spain.

The first day of Super X competition on the Costa Brava was characterized by variable winds, unashamedly teasing the riders. After the predicted morning winds failed to materialize, an increasing thermal breeze lured the reigning Super X champion Matt Pritchard (US-10, Tabou/ Gaastra) out on the water. It turned out to be in vain, as the wind backed off again shortly after and sailors were back in the holding pattern. In the meantime, Matt Pritchard gave us a first hand account of competing in the Super X discipline. The interview can be found in the registration day news section.

Several hours later the wind unexpectedly swung from side onshore from the right to side onshore from the left and picked up significantly, sending the entire fleet hurrying for their gear and out on the water. While the course was being set by the organization, the riders made the most of the light conditions. But unfortunately it wasn’t to be. As the afternoon progressed, the wind dropped again as quickly as it came, leaving the first day of the 2005 Catalunya Costa Brava PWA Super X World Cup without an official result.

"When you’re sailing by yourself it’s alright, but with nine other guys around you it’s just too light", as John Skye (K-57, F2) gives the lowdown on today’s sailing conditions.

More pictures from today’s action and yesterday’s opening ceremony are available in the photo gallery. Tomorrow’s skippers’ meeting is scheduled for 10:00 with a first possible start at 10:30. As today has demonstrated, conditions in the bay of Roses can change unexpectedly any minute...
