Gran Canaria Grand Slam
14|08|2004      day 3 - aug 13, 2004

Victor Fernandez goes all the way to beat Kauli Seadi in the final of the second freestyle single elimination here in Pozo and Daida Moreno beats her sister, Iballa to the top spot in the ladies fleet. Read on for the full story from today here in Gran Canaria.

We waited from 8.30am until 12.30 for the swell to increase but the waiting was only repaid with an increase in wind but not swell. Josh Angulo and Scott McKercher were on the water early, proving that there were a few waves to ride but the sets were few and far between and very small, so in the end the decision was made to switch to freestyle.

Victor Fernandez wins
The second Freestyle single elimination started in 20 knots of wind and almost no waves. Early exists from Kevin Mevissen, Ben Proffitt, Tonky Frans and local sailor Jonas Ceballos left the door open for some interesting heats. In the quarter finals Robby Swift went down to Cheo Diaz, Ricardo Campello went down to Colin Sifferlin and the winner of the first double elimination Taty Frans couldn’t match the fire power of Spanish hotshot and Pozo supremo Victor Fernandez who was on a major roll. Something we haven’t seen from him in a while.

The Semi Final saw Colin Sifferlin v Kauli Seadi and Cheo Diaz v Victor Fernandez. All sailors went full on, especially Kauli who could see the door opening to an event rankings lead. Colin was looking good but Kauli was on form and used his extensive competition experience to advance to the final. Victor Fernandez was looking like he had this freestyle insanity wired and blasted through to the final.

The loser’s final was now Diaz v Sifferlin and in his usual laid back style Sifferlin was a good ten seconds late leaving the beach! Diaz wanted a podium position and he wanted it bad and went for it full on landing some sweet switch stance spock 540s and flakas to take 3rd leaving Sifferlin in 4th.

In the Ladies fleet it came down to the now familiar semi final of Moreno v Jaggi and Moreno v Alonso. Iballa was keen to make it to a final and made sure she did everything possible to advance over Jaggi. Daida was looking in control and used her ability to score big jumps off the smallest waves to advance over Alonso. The Moreno v Moreno final was full of raw natural talent and smooth Spanish flare as both sisters slid and looped their way through a thrilling 6 minute show piece of female windsurfing. In the end it was the Daida who took the victory and Iballa who had to settle for 2nd.

Daida loops
The men’s final could have gone either way as Seadi was gunning for the top and Fernandez had slotted into top gear and was smiling all the way. 32 moves and 5 minutes later it was close. Seadi had attempted 15 moves and landed 12 while Fernandez went for 17 and pulled off 13. Both sailors had an equal amount of difficult moves slotted in to their repertoires but it was Fernandez with his switch stance back loop and super fast Flaka who was looking the smoothest on the water. The judges came to the same decision and the second single elimination went to an ecstatic Victor Fernandez.

Colin Sifferlen - Chacho
This result has opened a major rankings issue. Seadi is now leading the event and Campello is down in 5th. With 5 days to go Campello will have to fight hard to regain a podium position here in Pozo but more importantly he needs to finish 6th or better to hold on to his World number 1 ranking.

Nail biting stuff here in the mid Atlantic. With Waves and Racing still to come and a possible 2 more freestyle disciplines the story is far from over so keep your computers logged on to www.stehsegelrevue.com for all the latest news and views from the 2004 Gran Canaria PWA Super Grand Slam
